Other Pumps

This page primarily contains photos of Caerphilly Tar Plant and Avenue Tar Plant just prior to demolition.  During this time attempts were made to find buyers for as many pumps as possible.

Joseph Evans Twin 6x5x9 No.31308

This pump was located in the No.1 Tar Distillation Unit at Caerphilly Tar Works and was installed in 1939. The No.1 Distillation Unit had not been used since the mid 1970s and with time, various bits and pieces had been removed to keep the adjacent and identical No.2 Tar Distillation Unit running up until closure at the end of 1985. The photos were taken in the early 1990's, prior to demolition in 1992 and the upper crankshaft bearings had already been stolen. This pump was scrapped, but is identical to the twin that forms part of the collection No.31312.

Joseph Evans Quad Acting Twin Reliable 6x4˝x9 No.31308

Installed in1938 for the new tar distillation works at Caerphilly, South Wales as one of the pitch circulating pumps for No.1 tar distillation unit. This unit was not used after 1977 although remained in situ until demolition in 1996. This photo was taken in 1992.

Joseph Evans Reliable Twin 6x6x9 No.37637 1949

This photo was taken in the Daily Products Pumphouse, at the Caerphilly Tar Distillation Works in the early 1990s before demolition in 1992. The steam pipes have been cut prior to removal of the pump. This pump is in the No.2 position within the pumphouse, where originally 10 pumps were installed in 2 rows of 5. The original No.2 pump No.30898, size 8x6x9 was removed and replaced by the above pump during the early 1970s. No.30898 was not fitted with a liner and was literally 'worn out' following constant use since 1939. Only the steam cylinder exists as a donation pot at the Museum of Power in Langford, Essex.

These 3 pumps were the last left in the daily products pumphouse just prior to demolition. The painted numbers are to help identify the pumps to prospective purchasers. The photo was taken in 1996. These pumps were installed new in 1938 details as follows:

Painted No.3 is DPP No.3, Serial No.30905, 8 x 6 ˝ x 9. Painted No.2 is DPP No.4, Serial No.30916, 8 x 6 ˝ x 9 with jacketed pumping end. Painted No.1 is DPP No.5, Serial No.30892, 8 x 6 ˝ x 9 with jacketed pumping end.

Joseph Evans Horizontal Duplex 5x5x5 No.30954

New to the Caerphilly tar works in 1938 where it was used in several locations until the 1970’s where it ended up as the standby pump in the Synthatar Plant where all the tar blends, mixes and fuels for the works were made. It remained in situ until demolition in 1996 when it was eventually scrapped.

Joseph Evans Horizontal Duplex 6x4x6 No.53/33618B

This pump was one of a pair installed in 1953 for the new No.3 tar distillation unit being built at the Caerphilly tar works, South Wales. It was the No.2 feed pump and continued in use until the tar distillation activity shut at the end of 1985. This pump was then relocated to the Synthatar plant to replace a well-worn Worthington-Simpson duplex pump and continued in this role until final closure in 1992. It was scrapped as the site was cleared in 1996.

Joseph Evans Horizontal Duplex Pumps

The two transfer/mixing pumps located in the Synthatar plant at the Caerphilly tar works and used from 1987 to final closure in 1994.

Foreground 6 x 4 x 6, No.53/33618B formerly the No2.crude tar feed pump for No.3 tar distillation unit until 1985. Transferred into the Synthatar plant in 1987. Background 5 x 5 x 5, No.30954 the standby Synthatar transfer pump. This photo was taken during demolition in 1996 and this is confirmed by the visible daylight as the building roof and sides have just been removed.

Joseph Evans horizontal Reliable 6x4˝x9 No.34680

Installed new in 1938 at the Caerphilly Tar distillation works and used for mixing and transferring “Presomet”, a proprietary black tar paint until closure of the works in 1992. The pumping end is steam jacketed and this view clearly shows the heavy-duty flywheel. The pump was eventually scrapped in 1996.

All riveted egg head boiler used as a electrically heated refined tar storage tank located at the Caerphilly tar works, South Wales. Unable to save and eventually scrapped.

Joseph Evans Horizontal Quad Acting Twin Reliable 6x5x9 No.57/62309B

This pump was one of 3 originally located at the tar works of Salamon & Sons of Ferry Road, Rainham, Essex. Upon closure these three circulating pumps were purchased in 1971 for spares and transferred to Caerphilly tar works. This photo shows the remains of one pump, in two halves, in the spares compound.

Joseph Evans Horizontal Reliable 12x10x12 Nos. 35292 or 35466

Originally located at the Metropolitan gas works site, at East Greenwich on the banks on the River Thames in South London. Purchased for spares in 1970’s and transferred to Caerphilly. Upon closure of the Caerphilly site they were purchased privately, restored and one may have been exported.

Lee Howl Horizontal Duplex 8x8x10 No.72346

One of a pair of pumps used to circulate hot liquid pitch for the tar distillation unit at St.Anthony’s tar plant, Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne. Upon closure in 1978 the pumps were transferred to Caerphilly tar works for storage/spares. This pump was subsequently installed and used to blend and circulate refined tar. On the right is an electrically driven drum gear pump. In 1996 this pump was scrapped and the site cleared.

Lee Howl Horizontal 12x14x24 No.41161

Installed at the Caerphilly tar works site in 1938 for blending road tars until 1970 when it was transferred to the crude tar pump house where it became the main pump transferring crude tar from road and rail tanks to storage. It was a large pump and could handle 12,000 gallons per hour of hot crude coal tar. Its exhaust could be heard several miles away on a quite still day. Various attempts were made to preserve it but its shear size made it very difficult and eventually it was scrapped in 1996 as the site was being cleared.

Joseph Evans Twin 6x5x9 No.33952C

This pump is one of 3 Twin pumps installed at the Avenue Tar Distillation Plant on the Avenue Coke Works site, Wingerworth, Chesterfield. On the day the photo was taken, this was the only twin left and it appears to have been carefully removed, for preservation perhaps? Location and by whom is not known.
